Design & Build with FSC Application 2012

The Forest Stewardship Council US invites all commercial and residential building projects to submit applications for the 8th Annual Design & Build with FSC Awards. These awards recognize excellence and innovation in the use of FSC-certified building materials in residential and commercial design and construction. The awards honor designers and builders who are committed to using FSC-certified wood and creating a marketplace that promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically prosperous management of the world’s forests.

The Design & Build with FSC Awards are open to homeowners, architects, interior designers, general contractors, builders, consultants and other professionals committed to using FSC-certified wood.

Eligible projects:

  • Commercial, institutional, mixed-use, or residential
  • At least 50% of new wood used (by cost) is FSC-certified
  • Must be located in the United States or Canada
  • Must have been completed during or after 2010

Selection criteria include:

  • The amount of FSC-certified wood used (by cost) in the project
  • Appropriateness of wood use, creative expression and innovation
  • Efforts to advance FSC market transformation (e.g., new FSC certificates issued, ability to replicate the project, affordability, relationships formed along the supply chain)

Past award winners have included the CityCenter project in Las Vegas, which used more than $41 million of FSC-certified wood, and the FondAction Building Quebec, a 60,000 square-foot office building composed entirely of FSC-certified glued-laminated wood.

In 2011, the winning projects included the Hawaii Preparatory Academy Energy Research Lab, a “Living Building” that used 100% FSC-certified wood, and zHome, and 10-unit spec home development in the Seattle suburb of Issaquah, where 78 percent of wood used was FSC certified.
