On April 2, 2012, the Forest Stewardship Council and U.S. Forest Service signed a Memorandum of Understanding, formally recognizing that Forest Stewardship Management Plan Standards of the Forest Stewardship Program meet requirements for the FSC Forest Management Standards for family forests. In addition, management plans for landowners in FSC-certified groups or for individual FSC-certified family forests will now meet Forest Stewardship Management Plan Standards. This agreement, which focuses on family forests, states that FSC and Forest Service management plan standards are in alignment. Additionally, FSC and the Forest Service will work together where there are opportunities to advance mutual objectives. The primary goal for the new agreement is to provide easier access to FSC certification for smaller private forest landowners who are currently participating in the Forest Stewardship Program.
