Permanent Indigenous Peoples Committee of the FSC |
|
Since the approval of Motion 19 at the 2011 FSC General Assembly, the Indigenous Peoples Working Group (IPWG) and FSC International have been working on implementing this motion, which calls for the establishment of a Permanent Indigenous Peoples Committee (PIPC) to provide advice and support to the FSC Board of Directors on issues concerning indigenous peoples and FSC certification. Reference Terms were developed by the IPWG and approved by the FSC Board of Directors. The first regional meeting for North American IPs was held in Canada in June, where overall support was achieved for both the reference terms (with a few small changes) and the concept of the PIPC. The next regional meeting will be held in Lima, Peru, during the last week of August, for IP organizations of Latin America. After that, regional meetings will be held in Africa, Northern Europe, and Asia and the Pacific region. The IPWG and the FSC International staff are working on identifying IP members of FSC, and other IP organizations who may not be members but who are involved in forestry and/or certification, to invite them to the regional meetings. At this time we would ask all National Focal Points, National Representatives, National Offices and Regional Offices to help us identify suitable candidates for these meetings in your countries, and communicate this to Gemma Boetekees, the FSC Network Director: g.boetekees@fsc.org and Larry Joseph, member of the IPWG and the liaison of the FSC Board of Directors for the PIPC: larry.joseph@me.com Thank you all for your assistance!
