4th Comment Period Opens; Opt-In to Vote

The US Green Building Council has announced it will open an unprecedented Fourth Public Comment Period on LEED 2012 from May 1 – 15, 2012.

US Green Building Council bylaws require “significant” changes to the LEED standard to undergo public comment before a vote, which indicates the fourth draft of LEED 2012 will be different from the third draft.

It is also certain the fourth draft will be very close to final.

When it comes from responsibly managed, FSC-certified sources, wood is among the most environmentally friendly building materials — a fact LEED should recognize and reward. To accomplish this — and its mission of market transformation — LEED must achieve two objectives: 1) Set the bar high by accepting only leadership standards; and 2) Create enough incentive for building projects to meet or exceed this bar.

In addition to releasing the Fourth Draft, May 1 is also the last day to join the “Consensus Body” that will vote on LEED 2012. According to USGBC bylaws, “to vote in the LEED 2012 ballot, you must join the Consensus Body during the Opt-In Period, April 2 – May 1.”

FSC-US encourages all USGBC members to opt-in by the May 1 deadline.

To be eligible to join the Consensus Body and vote in the LEED 2012 ballot your organization’s membership must have been in good standing with USGBC by March 1, 2012, and this standing must be maintained throughout the balloting period.

LEED 2012 will be balloted from June 1 – 30, 2012.
